Type MG12 and MG13 mechanical seals

Type MG12 and MG13 mechanical seals are a family of seals that are widely used in commercial centrifugal pumps. They are a design originally developed by Burgmann Industries for use in pumps handling dirty or contaminated water. Where a standard mechanical seal relies on close tolerances at the shaft to exclude debris, the MG12 and MG13 incorporate a rubber bellows against the shaft that acts as a dirt excluder, preventing grit, sand, and particulate from migrating into the seal faces. This makes them well suited to raw water transfer, saline water, waste water and irrigation applications where water quality cannot be guaranteed.

The seal uses a single coil spring to tension the rotary face against the stationary seat, and the rubber bellows functions both as the shaft seal and to provide a barrier to debris entering the back the seal mechanism, simplifying the overall seal function. The rotary face is commonly carbon graphite and the stationary face ceramic, though silicon carbide combinations are available for higher wear applications. On the MG12 the stationary is seated with a standard right angle shaped moulded gasket, whereas the MG13 uses a standard O-ring seated in a groove the back of the section.

Both the MG12 and MG13 comply with the DIN EN 12756 : 2000 standard (formerly DIN 24960) for centrifugal pump seal dimensions. The MG13 is a variant of the MG12 design with a longer spring section. The MG13 seal has an L1 dimension (see the diagram) that complies with the L1K specification in the DIN EN 12756 : 2000 standard. This longer L1 length means the seal spring has a longer compression length, and so the MG13 can be preferred for higher performance or higher pressure applications compared to the MG12.

MG12 and MG13 seals are widely used by manufacturers like Grundfos, Lowara, Ebara, KSB and others, in both their ISO/DIN spec pumps and other application like waste water.
